Hi all, could any of you good people take a look at these photos and the position of the rear mech in relation to the hanger? The chain is reluctant drop onto the smallest socket (even with the gear cable disconnected) and I was wondering if the rear mech's positioning is the cause. The cage seems quite high when the chain does eventually drop onto sprocket number 9. Many Thanks.

This comes up semi-regularly. Your mech is mounted wrongly. What looks like the two pivot points should be aligned almost horizontally before screwing the mech into the hanger.

Thanks. The rear mech will need replacing soon so I will remember that advice.

Rear mechs last decades if a crash doesn’t upset them. You sure it needs replacing, and for what reason?

The hex nut connecting it to the hanger has rounded so the mech cannot be adjusted. Might as well replace the hanger & mech.

Just unscrew it and remount. No need to disconnect the cable or anything.

Unfortunately I cannot unscrew it due to the above reason. The hex key just keeps turning in the rounded hole.
