Is it on a lych way?
Looks ok for a coffin rest

I don't know. It's not near a church. It's weird, a niche cut into the rock on a lane with nothing much nearby.

It is next to a mill pond. The lane is "Furnace Lane" so maybe there was some industry there at some time. It's on the lane that runs along the north side of the pond here. It's near the Ashdown Forest and there used to be iron industry there up until the 17th century. Maybe something to do with that.

A coffin rest would either be really quite close to a burial ground or it could be a good few miles from a consecrated burial ground, probably about half to the parish church from a smaller settlement. S'pose it could be a flash bus stop or milk stop (in the days of urns).
I've just had a Google along the lane. It looks an old route and heads into Cowden which has an ancient church and would probably have been nearest. On Google if I zoom in it looks hand chiselled so probably C19 at the newest. It has been repaired a few times but I would guess, in very broad terms, it is Post Medieval. Near the ponds so might of been to keep things cool
