If you do bin it make sure your rear derailleur stops are set up correctly and take great care never to bang the derailleur on anything(which you should do anyway). The pie plate could save you a lot of expense one day.

Not something I would have previously noticed - judging by the response to my post, I probably will now! :-)

I'm only joking really. I found the discs quite unsightly, so I was quite pleased when people pointed out they weren't really necessary! I guess they come with bikes just in case the derailleur gets knocked or badly set-up.

When I bought my nice road bike, the disc was on in the showroom, but had been removed by the mechanic when I went to collect it.

i removed mine...had a very minor spill on a charity ride which bent my deraileur hanger a tiny bit, which in turn meant that my indexing was thrown out...mile down the road a change in gear had the chain jamed between the biggest cog and the wheel...and let me tell you that took some shifting !!.... Spent the rest of the ride staying in the middle to high range on the back cog......having said this i didnt bother to replace the pie plate....just made a mental note to fall over on the non drive side in future !
or just don't fall?!
Cheers Ed

Right my curiosity was piqued so i went for a look. My good bike has one but my cheap commuter doesn't, not sure what to take from this.
Your commuter was PDI'd well, your best bike wasn't*

*maybe

I haven't got one of my bikes back on the road yet after a spot of bother late on the first of January when I had to carry my bike three miles home when multiple spokes got damaged and the back wheel locked because there was no pie plate fitted. Maybe the derailer did get a knock, who would know what happened on New Years Day?
Pie plates are wonderful, you don't now how wonderful until you haven't got one when you needed one.
