Do modern tattoos not smear and fade like these old ones do?

Not if looked after. Kept out of the sun etc.
Much different inks now to what was used back in the day.
But.. saying that, some of the tattoos I had done 40 years ago, some of the colours are still nice and bright. It's mainly the Reds and yellow that have faded.
My next work is to get an old leg piece from 30 years back done with new ink. Should make it really sparkle.

The star and circle will be red, the nekked feller black, and otherwise exactly like it is depicted there.

Yeah, that'll look badass. Which isn't necessarily something I'd associate with Rush!

Geddy Lee is a God!

My oldest tattoo, 36 years old now, has faded and gone slightly fuzzy. The others haven't really. The modern inks seem to fade slightly and then stop there, much more UV resistant.

i had my left ear pierced when i was a kid. it had to be your left ear, if you got your right ear done you were g*y apparently, kids! 😩
anyway it hurt . had a small earring for a while but took it out and have never had a piercing since. tattoos... i toyed with the idea when some mates started getting them but couldn't think of what to get and thankfully decided not to get anything. i think i would have regretted it.

is there a lot of pressure on young ones to get tattoos and piercing these days? i guess i got it done because my friends were and the tattoo thing was the same. although i feel tattoos were not as popular with young people when i was young.

I don't think it's pressure, but as mentinoed before in this thread - tattoos have become more accepted across all social groups i.e. not just bikers and sailors! My son is 12 and already went through a phase of wanting a piercing, and is apprently going to get a tattoo when he's 18 (until he realises how much they cost and he's got to pay for it)

They seem to be very popular with teens. For me personally, I'd never be able to decide on something i wanted permanently inked on any part of my anatomy. My personal view is that it's a bit worrying that some of these teens are effectively just turning themselves into walking scribble note books - just random, often very poor quality tattoos, and with little thought as to how it might affect them in the future.

Some I know have aspirations to be actors and whilst tattoos don't prevent you getting jobs, if a production has a choice between someone that they have to use coverup on and someone that they don't, they are going to go with "don't" unless that person is really going to be an audience draw.

I had one done maybe 25 years ago now, and it faded from the off. It was the ink they used, apparently, but they wouldn't go over it and I'd spent quite a bit in the place over the previous couple of years, so never went back again.

I've had the back side of my fingers done recently and (as the place warned me) they wore out very quickly.
Oddly enough, I'm on there right now as my wife is having one done, and I've come with her to discuss my next two. I want my knees done at some point, but have been bottling it, tbh. A couple of the tattooists here are more gentle though, so I think it'll be one of them who does them!

Mine caused much annoyance to the guvnors when I worked.

There was a no visible tattoos policy. However, I can't wear long sleeve shirts as following my assault while on duty I had to have three ops, in one of which they removed the damaged bursa from my elbow.

As a consequence I had no padding or protection over the point of that elbow and a long sleeve shirt would pull tight over the elbow as I bent the arm and was (and still is) bloody painful.

Because of this the FMO signed me as unable to cover my arms, which caused much angst with the scrambled egg ranks as that left my tattoos visible.

The constant questioning and sniping if I went anywhere other than my own station where they all knew me was nothing short of bullying behaviour, and part of the reason I cashed in my chips and went on a medical.

Is numbing cream effective?

100% yes. I wished it was available back in the day when I had my armpits, elbows, kidneys and other naughty spots done.
I started using it a couple years back when getting my leg sleeves done. It was a revelation. However... as I found out.. my body reacted quite badly to it.
So advice is to try some first to see if you get any reaction. I used TKTX and it was brilliant.
However, if you do go down that route. Be careful where you get the cream from, only get it direct from the manufacturers, not 3rd party websites. There's a lot of fake stuff around.

Where's everyone's most painful tattoos been applied to, then? I had an elbow done many years ago which was horrific (took me years to get the other done), the worse after that was one on my chest but the one that eclipsed the lot was on my shin. It was like someone bouncing a road drill off my leg for a couple of hours. The strange thing was getting the opposite side of each of those (i.e right elbow, left side of chest and left shin) were all a doddle. I actually fell asleep when having my left shin done. It's definitely an artist thing, some hurt more than others.
