I would add to the advice above the questions as to how long and how 'hard' you will be riding?

I have a MET helmet that cost about £60.00. I ride two 30 minute journeys a day. Going to work is okay as it is the easier ride. Going home I get quite hot, as it is mostly up hill. I will eventually replace my MET with a more expensive air cooled hat later on or abandon helmets all together (I'm on the fence about them but it keeps my wife happy, so I wear it).

I went to my LBS today and upgraded a few components in store. Whilst I was waiting for my new clipless pedals to be fitted I tried on a few helmets and ended up getting a new Giro phase. Slightly comfier than the trek models, glad I tried lots out before buying.
