So, personally, I literally love discourse markers. They can tell you so much more about the speaker, his or her state of mind-confident, nervous, out of their depth-whether they know the subject or have just "wikied-up" on it, what they consider their social status, how the conversation is going, know what I mean?
I'm not sure what a 'discourse marker' is, but if it's the thing that makes cold-callers call me 'yourself' rather than 'you', then I agree.

Its one of those like, unnecessary words like that like people put in their sentences for like no reason?

My daughters seem to have started doing this. I counter it by taking them at their word.

So - you want "like a drink of milk"? Well, I could get some water and mix in some white powder paint, is that close enough?

And they "literally" love them, when they mean figuratively. This could have been an attempt at ironic humour, but I'm not good at spotting that sort of thing,

Oh and George Clarke (Old House, New House, et al) has invented one that I hate, and that is slowly bleeding into estate agent speak, as if their language isn't hateful enough to begin with....

"Space", when he means "room".

"Oh this space has so such potential".
No, it's a room George, it's always been a room. It didn't need a new name.

Women being instructed on how to modify their speech so as to sound 'more acceptable'

(subtext 'acceptable' to men)

Haven't we already spent long enough fighting for the right to be heard, or better still listened to politically?? .

Without then, being subjected to endless lectures, on how "We're doing it all wrong"

I find some mens voices nigh on unlistenable - - - Shall I list the ways??
Whoa, how did the Feminist/Chauvinist card manage to get brought into what is a jolly good 'general' moan post? The phrases/words mentioned are used by all so lets get back on track here (oh damn, there is another annoying one) :stop:
