Yes that's the sort of thing but in my case it's generated in the camera rather than as a result of the object being photographed. ie - not object dependent

Yes indeedy.
Before you replace the camera, I would try my extreme approach. Give it a fair few big smacks with the palm of your hand, this is my go to approach when things seem totally screwed and I am about to replace them. More often that not it works, I like to think of myself as the Fonz.
