Errrm - What's that and how?

In your settings / toolbox icon menu is an option for RESET.
Restore to factory settings.

OK - will have a look at that.

Correct. It's either an easy DiY fix or a new camera.

Put it on "Auto" and see what you get.

It's usually on auto (but is it now? - I'll check).

I don't know your level of expertise but it's possible you've inadvertently messed up one or some of the settings (ISO, shutter speed, aperture and possible white-balance or exposure compensation.

Possibly settings got altered while carrying about in my luggage...........

Is there a "tap" function on the camera to get it to focus on the central image, before actually taking the shot?

There's a focussing thing that happens as I slowly depress the trigger before clicking for the shot.

Try posting a link to the actual file - you will need to host it where we can get the actual file - the images on cyclechat strip out the EXIF information. EXIF information is metadata, it tells us exactly what the camera was doing. If you can't host the image anywhere, then you can get the EXIF information for us directly by going to http://exif.regex.info/exif.cgi and pointing to a file stored on your PC. Then simply cut and paste all the information the website shows and post it here.

If the dark were leaking out, there would be a pool of it in the bottom of the camera bag.

The aperture (size of the hole letting in the light), shutter speed (how long the hole is open for) and ISO (how sensitive the sensor is to light) all seem normal for how both images should look if the camera was performing correctly. If the exposure is now seemingly fixed, can you post another image and the exif info?

I checked earlier and the exposure problem is as before (thought it was better but that was with a pretty dark subject - normal lighting gives a very over exposed image) so despite RESET-ting nothing has really changed. TBH I think it's a new camera time. The Fringe thing is a complete mystery I suppose?

It might be better to simply replace the camera.

No - the fringe thing isn't chromatic aberration. It might just be something to do with pixel pitch in the image and pixel pitch in the screen - also known as Moire Fringes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moiré_pattern Thing is I've never ever seen this before with this camera.

Has the camera had a knock?

Not to my knowledge. Last time I used it and it worked was at home in my garage. I and it subsequently travelled by air to Madeira where I found that it just didn't work. Symptoms as reported above. It might have had a knock during transit but it was in my hand luggage and didn't get knocked any more than in the past.
