I never seem to get any cold calls... maybe two or three in the last five years.

Where do they get your phone numbers from?

If I get a call from one of those "I have it on good authority that you have recently been involved in a car accident", I tell them I have it on good authority that I have heard that one of their parents have died. Luckily I am a funeral director and can offer them a special deal. I then ask "Which do you prefer burned or buried?".

You treat thieving scammers how you want, I'll treat them how I want.

It's not about the scammers. It's about how you treat each scammer based on their sex and your way of thinking. Man = confuse them with Welsh town names. Woman = Get smutty with her

It doesn't take Freud to work it out.

Don't tell me, tell the poor sap who has just lost forty years of his pension. And if the worst thing that ever happens to a lowlife thieving scammer is being insulted over the phone she is leading a charmed life.

We had a new one (to us) today. A message left telling me there is a warrant for my arrest being issued. To discuss it with an officer press 1.
Right, yeah .

I'd be willing to bet that most of the cold callers don't even know their bosses are scammers, they have just been given a script to follow and told to pass on any likely-sounding victims to the real scammer.

You would lose your bet.

I've had several conversations with scammers after having kept them on the line for half an hour or more. I tell them that at least they haven't been able to scam anyone more vulnerable during that time.

Their response is always along the lines of "I couldn't care less, there are plenty of other mugs out there ..."

Theres a BT one going round. Phone rings telling your your internet is about to be cut off cos if an u paid bill or such like. It tells you to press 1 to talk to an adviser but it then rings a premium number and racks up a big bill.

I'd be fascinated to know how they turn an incoming call into an outgoing one ...

It is not technically possible for that to happen

There are multiple ways, if you put your name & phone number when you sign up for something, sometimes these details are then legitimately sold onto 3rd parties, if you read the small print it will say so, alternatively some people (often agency staff) download customer details from databases & then sell on the information, another method is hacking into databases & stealing the information, another favorite is taking a range of numbers let's use Sheffield as an instance Gamma who are a Range Holder have the range 01142 220 0000 to 01142 220 9999 you set up an automatic dialler to call each number in turn, often in a random order, you wait until you get a ringing signal then you hang up the call. The numbers that get a ringing tone go into one file the ones that don't go into another, one file is worthless the other has a value.

I was at my mums 80 year old mum's house today when the phone rang...she answered it and after 5 seconds said

Bu#ger off.. then hung up

Then said to me... they said they were from BT and my line was going to be cut off... don't know how they were going to that when im on Virgin cable...

^_^ I've trained her well
