Phone "dangerously full", but how do I deal with it?

My not very high-end Samsung phone is telling me it's "dangerously full".

I use it for WhatsApp, a few alarms and that's pretty much it apart from the occasional phone call. I can't find anything in any of the folders that could be filling the hard drive. Any thoughts as to what it might be and how to reduce the problem?

How does it handle attachments from WhatsApp? Are they automatically downloaded somewhere?

WhatsApp Indeed. I'm sure you can probably change settings somewhere, if I could be bothered to look, but WhatsApp downloads all pictures and videos on my phone. As I'm a member of several WhatsApp groups relating to my hobbies, and people like to post pics and videos, it is all downloaded and needs deleting periodically.

On my old Samsung there was a setting for auto deleting Whats App messages after a week. I needed to activate that to stop my phone saying similar.

Use the free CCleaner. Don't buy it, not worth the difference.

+1 for giving WA a good rodding.

Where are your contacts saved? Phone or SIM. I favour SIM. Others will disagree. They always do

I've deleted the contents of WhatsApp; no change.

The Samsung cleaner gave me a few MB so it's not showing red any more, but it's still pretty full.

My phone was downloading and storing loads of unwanted podcasts without my knowledge.

Have a look at storage in settings to see what is using it.

my moto stores images from whats app in the photos folder, i have to clear them out or my phone has full of the chat about club rides .

That helped... a bit: down to 14.1GB instead of 18GB

App says:
Documents: 0 GB
Images: 1.32 MB
Audio: 4.57 MB
Video: 0 MB
Applications: 1.2 GB

Not sure how that makes 14.1 GB

Are no useless apps taking up that memory between the Mb you are showing and the Gb being disclosed as used?
Can you transfer items the items you want to keep from the internal storage to the micro SD card?
