I recently swapped from shimano to speedplay light action pedals. Best thing I put on the bike, knee pain totally gone and you can clip in really easily to either side of the pedal. They're also easy to clip out of. With the shimanos they were stiff even on the lightest tension (being female I found a lot of pedals hard to clip out of) and I had to clip out way before the junction, now I can just pull up and unclip at the last minute.

Well I've got some double sided SPDs that a friend lent me, so I'll give them a go first.

The reason I wanted dual purpose was that I sometimes take my son on the back, and thought I might prefer to be able to get my foot down that second or two quicker in a tight spot.

Thanks. I guess I'll either only use SPDs, or get the dual purpose ones with flats on one side, SPD on the other.

What we really need is one where the whole SPD mechanism can properly retract into the pedal cage on a cam or something so the cleat doesn't protrude when being used as a flat pedal.

I have Specialized road shoes and use the Look platform pedals (new version) Very smooth exit using minimal twist - I wouldn't go for SPD unless on MTB (which or course I don't have)!. QED

Did my post do something to offend you to warrant being completely ignored? :'(

Sorry, I missed it.
