I don't think pedaling at much over 70 rpm comes naturally to a beginner, much less in some cases, in fact I think grinding on a big gear is more likely to come before pedaling faster. What this means is that as long as we agree that the optimum will be somewhat higher than this, pedaling at a high cadence is a learned technique. frequent riding will bring improvement without too much effort but IMHO turning the cranks at 90 - 100 rpm requires training and in doing this the body will adapt resulting in greater efficiency.

I find it more natural to spin faster than have it in higher gear. I always make sure My thighs are burning away nicely tho. Otherwise what's the point. Suppose we are like cars of different engine types. Some cruise along at low rpm, some are more revvy.

Trouble is cycling is mainly a cardio form of exercise , if your thighs are burning all the time then your legs will tire quicker and you will not be able ride as far as as i found out this week riding my mtb which has a wider range cassette so i was trying to push to bigger gear it can feck your joints up .

I mean pushing myself in an enjoyable way rather than being in agony. Slight burn , not feeling like going to die. I find manageable suffering quite addictive. Can do 100-150km like that no probs. hoping to enter a London - Paris in 24 hours next year so been upping the endurance levels. So need to push it :bicycle::becool:
