Thanks all for the useful tips. Must practise more. If I'd cut my 30 minute struggle down to 10 I may not have been freezing when I got cold.

Try them out right now. Let the air out of a tyre and make sure that you can use them to lift it off. Don't wait till you're 40 miles from the house to find out.

Thanks for the tip. They seem to work pretty well.

My Park Tool levers all snapped on my Fulcrum 7's (all four of them). Trying out some new ones from my LBS so I'll see how I get on with mine.

Just tried out of new 'Pedro's Tyre Levers' - absolutely fantastic! I broke four Park Tool levers getting the tyre on, these had the tyre off in 30 seconds and back on in the same amount of time! There isn't much to sa about tyre levers except that these ones are brilliant and I'm going to carry them in my saddlebag now. They were rated 5 stars by BikeRadar too - http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/categ...evers/product/review-pedros-tyre-levers-10183

Forgeries?

I have some decent Park ones, plus another set of very decent ones, just maybe from that ALdi tool kit, I forget.

Park Tool TL5C steel levers are excellent. About £18 these days but will last forever. RWright's TL6 levers are more expensive and prettier, and coated with plastic, and also a good product.

I've never used levers or any other tools to get a tyre on. The method in the M+ video is what I was shown 45 years ago. M+ tyre takes about 30 seconds. Ordinary marathon about 20sec. My hands are quite small for a man, and not particularly strong. The releasable cable tie works better than the old idea of a piece of string.

I can get most tyres off without tools but usually use 2 levers to get started. I've not even scratched a rim doing it. The trick is never to slide the lever along the rim. Just use levers to lift the bead up and out. Very important is to free the bead from the side of the rim before starting.
