Point isn't really that valid, is it, considering the riders in a race are in much more of a hurry than any mechanic? It's 100% the mechanics fault. The rider is supposed to ride the course at full speed.

Oldish news but I've just read that Sigrid Ytterhus Haugset (Coop-Repsol) rode the lat 58km of P-R Femmes with what was later diagnosed as a broken hip
