Musee d'orsay is great, lots of famous impressionist stuff but if your not into art, it could be a bore, I like the Pompadou centre as top floor gives you a creme de la creme overview ovwer 100 years in art. i would advise Paris Time Out as a good guide book so, since your on Cycle Chat you should deffo check out Velib as Cathryn says, its a doddle but its only free for half an hour, for evening, I would knock about in the Marais great bars and little restaurants, chic-but no painfully so-crowd.

dont bother with the louve, too big such a short amount of time, and you feel a bit culturally drained afterwards and need a mcdonalds or summat, same with versaille and the eiffel tower unless you love views,

also reccomend the Catacombs for a non art interest and the conciergerie for revolution and la Terreur.

i went on one of these free walking tours once its good for orientaion and history and you just tip at the end.

thanks for all the advice so far guys!

If you're going by yourself, just get yourself to one the many irish bars in paris.

Aha. Got it. Get yourself up to montmartre (where the sacre coeur church is). Diverse bars and a an irish one... it's like the parisien covent garden.

I actually lived near gare d'est for a while, near rue saint martin I think, and used to have the odd demi in a shoot bar called l'apostrophe. Don't go there.

If it's a lurve thing, then Montmartre is good - but I'd just walk around the Isle de la Cite, (the 38 bus goes from Gare de l'Est), or take the 32 bus to Trocadero, and walk over the bridge to the Eiffel Tower. For what it's worth I think that just walking around Paris is the best thing - particularly at night. You can simply drop into a bar, spend half an hour, and then walk on....

thanks for all the tips guys!

got to paris at about 9am. went up to Sacre Coeur, then down to la fayette. checked into hotel, slept, then went to see notre dame, walk along the river, through louvre and all down the champs elysees to the arc de triomphe. was good to finally see where the cyclists do their stuff!

Second day we did the eiffel tower, then the catacombs (amazing, absolutely stunned by them!!!!), then we went to the louvre to see mona lisa etc, got some tickets off someone leaving, 2 for 5euros! then had to come back home

shame didn't get to do the velib thing, she didn't seem up for it!

cheers for the tips, especially the catacombs!
