The Smiths. What did anyone ever see in those dreary songs, shuffling lamely up and down the same two or three notes all the time?

Morrisey has learned to write melodies since those days.

I can understand people disliking the Smiths but I love the way that the magnificent sound of How Soon Is Now is married to Morrisey's very English lyrics about shyness. I think the trick about the Smiths is to recognise that they were indeed very English and a lot of the stuff is tongue in cheek. That sort of aids appreciation of them but ultimately you either like it or don't.

My view on the Beatles is that whilst they were indeed very good, not enough credit is given for the production - for those first couple of albums, the quality of sound was head and shoulders above other bands of that era (listen to sounds of the 60's or whatever it is - everything up to around '68 sounds like it was recorded in a shoebox compared to Beatles of the same era.
The Beatles always had one blimmin' song to spoil the album... Octopus's Garden, Yellow bloody Submarine, etc etc

The Killers. Over-produced, horrendously tuneless singing live, forced down the throat of the national consciousness by The OC. The kind of band for whom fans always come away from a gig swearing blind that it was "Amazing!" or "The best gig ever!" simply because they've got the album on repeat in their pathetic tasteless little heads.

And while I'm ranting, Scouting For Girls deserve the kind of grisly demise that Papercorn2000 comes up with (and invariably results in my snorting coffee all over my keyboard).

I actually don't feel qualified to comment on Dexys, as I only know Cum On Eileen and Jocky Wilson Said by them. Preferred Jo Boxers tbh.

...and every Genesis album had a Phil Collins one on it. And then Peter Gabriel left and every song had Phil Collins on it...

I'd forgotten Phil Collins. Listening to the whole of one of his albums is like being forced to eat five pounds of boiled potatoes out of an aluminium bucket.

I've never really 'got' the excitement about The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and their ilk.

Sounding like an old fart here but most of the stuff people rave about now seems to just pass me by (for example, I presume Amy Winehouse IS very talented, but I just can't bring myself to listen to her). I was quite a big Muse fan a while ago but Andy in Sig has hit the nail right on the head by saying they are contentless; in the end I got fed up with Matt's inane wandering lyrics (although I'm still in awe of his musicianship) and moved over to classical music.

As a guitar player I have to admire the Smiths. Johnny Marr was/is a masterful and extremely well-respected guitarist.

Yes, I agree (although I can't stand The Smiths). His recent stuff as a member of Modest Mouse is good too, and all credit to him for joining another band.
