Please bear with me if this is obvious to you guys but have not really done any bike maintenance for many decades and they did appear o lot easier (or I was more gun ho then)

I have taken this centre cap of the pedals, do I need to undo that big recessed nut or are they just interference fit and require a bit of persuasion.

I'm assuming you want to remove the cranks from the bottom bracket?

If so, you'll need a crank removal tool like this one from Halfords. You'll be unlikely to be able to get it off by hand or by bashing it from behind with a hammer.

There's videos on Youtube to walk you through the process.

Thanks Siloch, yes got knocked off it so am going to strip it down and my mate who owns a body shop will spray it.

Then I am going to convert to flat bar (then I will have some questions!!!!)

Siloch, got the drive side off with considerable effort, the other side is being stubborn. Am leaving it to soak overnight and hope will have more joy when I go back to it or is it a matter of getting someone else to pull the crank arm against you?

Did you use a crank removal tool, or did you manage to do it without one?

The non-driveside crank comes off the same way as the driveside one you've already taken off. I.e. by removing the retaining central bolt and then using the crank removal tool again.

However, if you managed to get driveside one off without the specific tool and without damaging anything (and kudos to you for doing that), then gentle tapping with a hammer may work.

Are you intending to remove the bottom bracket as well, or are you leaving it in the frame and your mate is going to spray around it?

I went and got one of tools but the non drive side is proving rather tough. I was just going to mask up the BB.

Soak overnight (as you're doing), then give it another go tomorrow. Maybe a few gentle taps with a hammer will help to break the "seal".

Do make sure that there isn't a washer in there.
If there is, you'll not get the crank off, but you will rip the threads out of the crank and then have to muller it off with a big hammer and a lot of cursing.
And then buy a replacement crank, involving more cursing.
Don't Ask Me How I Know This.

I watched the YouTube video first so I was aware to look for the washer. I guess you found out the hard way!

Success, the overnight soak and the help of a big shifting device (hammer) got it off.

For today's daft question do these items in the next photo come off or do I just mask them up. They are where the old gear levers would have fitted but obviously I still need them as the cables run through them.
Cheers in advance.

Some screw into the bosses and can be removed, this one looks like it is brazed directly onto the downtube.
