Right,

Change the MTU on the router to 1450 - the AOL site says 1400 and 1450 - 1450 is apparently the right one..idiots.....

Use your browser and type in 192.168.0.1 - user = admin, password = password - this will take you into the router's admin pages.

Goto Advanced WAN Setup then change the MTU to 1450. Then click Apply

Speeded up my connection - was 1400.

Fossy,

This page took me to Network magic, I have printed off the instructions, and will give it a try , you apparently have to install a download after completing the 5 step set up which requires you to disconnect router, ethernet cable etc, etc, and conect to a second DSL modem! Is this correct?

Have you got the instructions for your router - I have a netgear - that address gives me the admin page, where I type in the username and password. Once into your router, you can change the MTU.

Don't disconnect anything - just 'log into your router' - you could always check the support page for your router for instructions -don't use AOL software - use IE or firefox to access it

you're talking to a complete techno twit, I haven't got the first clue with this sort of stuff, the router is a Thomson speedtouch, the only instructions were with the CD that came with the package, trouble is after a day at work a third of which is officially spent indoors! I am pretty tired when I get home and apart from coming on here, I can't muster the enthusiasm to start messing about with the bl**dy computer

A Thomson speedtouch is a broadband modem - i.e.it's pretty small, and plugs into your usb socket.

A router will be a bit bigger, and usually plugs into the network plug on your pc, and if it's a wireless one, will have a little antenna.

I'm not that much of a biff!:biggrin: It's definitely a router, little antennae an' all sticking up, I dunno what's wrong with it, search pages were coming up like a 5 yearold had scribbled them in crayon last week, seems OK now, still cannot get the bloody drag and drop upgrade to work though, generally slower than before we went wireless, thought I was going all Gucci and stuff, but it has just proved to be a pain in the bottom.

Sorry dude...my old connection was a Thomson ADSL MODEM , then I went AOL and got a netgear router - out of window, and drop kick it then............. you might not be able to reply though !
Forget the upgrade - I don't use the AOL software at all........

I've been with AOL for years. I've had a few intermittant problems, but nothing major. I phoned to cancel about two years ago, and as an incentive to stay they offered me the "Silver" package for £9.99 (It was £17.99). I've been on it ever since despite their various attempts at trying to get me to upgrade or go wireless (which would cost me more). I'm out in the sticks and can only get around 1mb speed anyways so no point paying anything else.

Yes, you need to be WITHIN 2k range of the telephone exchange to get 4mb plus speeds as a general rule. I am just over 4K away and with the online noise I can only get just over 1mb, sometimes less.

BTW- Although they are rubbish, if you do have Sky service you can get 1mb access free of charge, but it is limited by Bandwidth. I went for the 8mb just so I could get 40GB bandwidth per month = £5 per month. Cheap yes, service is really bad though unless your problem is extremely basic and common.........

as for AOL. I have always given them a very wide birth. They have always tried to control how you do things rather than just providing Internet access. Fine, if all you do is browse and use the email they provide. Much more and AOL will get in the way.

Likewise, it just annoys me that the ting used to work OK now it's less than perfect with little glitches, that pee me orf!

Have you been able to look at that MTU setting on your router ? My AOL has been much better, but some sites are very slow, others fine -still not right though
