The way I read that is, Lemond by using the words "could be" instead of "is" suggests that he thinks Contador might have been doping. Or is it just the English language, that can be easily misinterpreted one again, bring back Moriniho

Don't be hard on yourself. I would say that interpretation is a fair one, nothing 'mis' about it. Whether LeMond intended to imply that he believed Contador to be a doper is another story, but that interpretation is definitely there!

What does LeMond actually have to do with it now?

I hope he isn't just being a John Prescot and considered an expert in his field just because he was there once

In the absence of a facepalm smiley this one will have to suffice

If the sport was really clean this year, surely all the times and speeds would be reduced by about 10% compared with previous "unclean" years?

It's the wattage folk are looking at, and it's mostly in believable parameters this year - the Sports Scientist's blog and Cozy Beehive have a lot of the science behind all this (although some is, necessarily, speculation_.

The race at the front, at least, seemed cleaner and more believable this year. Nobody sprinting away up the mountains, barely breathing, nobody beating Cancellara in the last ITT (  ). In previous years a mountain domestique like Navarro, Heras, Piepoli, Hincapie (ha ha ha ha!) would have stayed with the best and possibly been gifted a stage as a reward.

Yes, I particularly noticed this entry: http://www.sportsscientists.com/2010/07/power-outputs-from-tour-de-france.html

where they state:

"on the Col du Tormalet, the climbing time was 56:30 for the Yellow Jersey, compared to that huge day in 2003, when Armstrong and Ullrich did it in 44:30. And yes, the race situation was different, but 12 minutes? That's too big to be accounted for by strategy alone, even weather conditions (yesterday may well have been more favourable anyway)."

The general power output or the peloton in the mountains ranged between 5.4 - 6.0W/kg, and only once did the output of the top riders approach the 6.2W/kg that is generally considered to be 'impossible' for humans to sustain undoped. In the Armstrong-Ullrich days, there were mountains entirely raced with outputs of 6.4W/kg on average!

Contadors time up alpe d'huez in this years dauphine was over 10 mins slower than Pantani's record.

In "Tour de Force" Michele Ferrari is quoted as saying thata cyclist nedded to be over 6.7 watts/kg

In all sports records get faster, higher further etc. If the ave speeds drop in the peloton then this is heavy circumstansial evidence of a drop in
performance caused by not uing doping and in cycling specifically epo and blood banking

by the way I can spell but the wireless keyboard is shoot

I don't believe for one second that Bolt is not using drugs.
What exactly do you base this belief on?
Well, doping amongst Caribbean sprinters is one of THE biggest problem in sport. Have a look on the web and see the controversy surrounding Athletics Scholarships to US Universities. African Americans are losing out on what used to be a reliable way to get a tertiary education because applicants from the West Indies appear to be so much more 'talented' when they apply at the end of High School. But up until last year (IIRC) there was no drug testing programs on the islands (and now only on Jamaica) whereas one has been in place in the US for years.

Then while they were at college, island athletes would be allowed to return home for warm weather training breaks where they would make spectacular improvements.

WADA has tried to make random spot checks on athletes, but such is the travel / immigration arrangement to most islands, that any unannounced visit is known about by all those concerned in plenty of time for them to be elsewhere.

And the reason that nothing is really said about the problem is that any accusations are shot down as either protectionism of US College places or sour grapes or jealousy that US sprinting has been eclipsed.

Fair enough

So one question - are athletes supposed to be clean for competition, or clean for life? I can see people thinking that pro sport isn't worth it if they are being followed everywhere by testers

Interesting question Zimzum. ISTR There's a lot of evidence pointing to the performance gain from rEPO being long lasting to a greater degree than thought previously. It's entirely possible that an athlete who for all intents and purposes is "clean" could still be reaping the benefit of prior cheating.

Why not just let everyone use performance enhancing drugs, thus removing their relative advantage?
