Can I ask what sort of riding you people are doing on the on-one's you own or are about to own. Are you all commuters ? or do any of you have one just for weekend rides ? I really like the idea of the hub gears and I only cycle for fitness and enjoyment. I like to do charity rides or organised rides from 20-100 miles and am not too bothered about having the quickest bike in the pack ! Just as long as it's a good comfortable ride with a decent bit of pace if required.

I commute on mine with rack, panniers and guards and then do the odd weekend ride and take the anchors off. Will be doing a 100m sportive on it soon. There's no point in getting a really quick bike, not that any bike is quick on its own, unless you are racing or doing fast rides where you need to keep up with a group.

The brief journeys I've done so far, I've not noticed any speed difference between the Pomp and my AluCarbon Bianchi. The Pomp will really show me it's worth when I'm riding through gritted roads in the winter. The fact I can put panniers on also makes my journey to work easier too.

This is mine. Not a pompetamine as they were not around when it was built up, but similar in most aspects. My use of it mirrors yours. Cycling just because I enjoy it.
Put together at start of this year after acquiring the bits over time. Started as an offer from On-One, hub frame and carbon fork for not much more than the alfine alone.
Much faster than the hybrid and if anything more comfy. I've even ridden an off road rail trail on it without any bother.

Thanks Piemaster......So you would have no problems with this type of bike for a 100 mile ride. I know I will never win any races and am not concerned with posting the fastest times or even competing against people but I do like to hold my own as they say. So the 'limit' of 8 gears on the pompetamine would allow me to get up the hills and pick up some pace on the flat. I am really only wanting to own 1 bike (not a range of bikes for different seasons or events). Basically before I spend this amount of money which to me is a huge amount to me for a bike I just want to be certain it will cover my requirements. Ideally I would like to get a test ride on one but not sure if this will be possible at all.
I have also looked at the Genesis Day 01 Alfine which is about the same price and now sold by Evans so may go to a store to check it out.
I have also seen that Giant do a 8 gear hub bike - Seek 0. Maybe worth me looking at this also.
Thanks again.

Errr......think you might have me mistaken for a fit person.;)

Most I've done in a day is 50 (but that was on the hybrid). The pomp rides have all been in 20-30 mile range, but I still felt quite fresh afterwards. Distance being more related to available time, I don't doubt I could manage 50 on it. I know the Kaffenback (pompinos derailler geared sister) has been used for sportive type events so don't see why not.
Work unfortunately keeps me away from home and I never get to build up the fitness for that sort of distance.

Piemaster....I was referring more to the bike being suitable for the 100 miles.(am not questioning your fitness levels:whistle:). I did a 50 mile ride on my hybrid last Sunday in the pouring rain. Great fun and really enjoyed it.
My fitness levels are upto the task just need to find a nice bike. I spent most of my ride last Sunday looking at everyones bike and can say that I did not see any hub gear bikes. Which I why I am questioning their suitability for such rides. (it was a charity ride last Sunday). I know most people go with deraillers but is that down to lack of knowledge and lack of bikes with hub gears ? maybe a bit of both.

@Rando. I got my Genesis Day 01 Alfine from UKbikesdepot for £899 which is a bit cheaper than RRP. Ordered Sunday, delivered Wednesday!

Have you managed to get out on it yet ? Can ask what type of usage your bike will get - commuting, weekend rides ? What made you decide on the Genesis . Sorry for all the questions !
Cheers for the posting of the price .

Should get out on it this weekend, still to put on the mudguards and rack also need to adjust the brakes. I was using the the dining room as a workshop but I got evicted so can't finish it until tomorrow. This is mainly to be used as my commuter.

@Rando. Can't see any reason not to do 100 mile rides with hub gears on a pomp. Hub gears seem to be the choice for circumnavigations for 100+ miles/day for weeks (rohloffs, but they are hub gears). Some of it must come down to tradition - derailleurs are just the way things are done and the pros use derailleurs so the cyclists will. Hub gears are pitched more at commuters/city cycling.

Thinking about it, the ride quality of the pompino is better than the hybrid (Giant Escape M0) despite 28mm tyres vs. 1.5 on the Escape
Steel frame + carbon fork > alloy frame + cromo fork

I don't own one (yet), but I do have an alfine geared Dahon Cadenza hybrid which is similar in some respects, though heavier. To give you some idea, I use the Dahon mostly for commuting but have taken it on the occasional club run upto about 60 miles or so. It's been fine and perfectly comfortable for that. I'd expect the Pompetamine or Day 1 to e a bit faster thanks to the drop bars and probably a bit more comfortable if the size is right - I tend to find drop bars better for comfort.

Right I am going to try and find either a Genesis Day 01 or Giant Seek 0 (both 8 gear hubs) to see if I can get a test ride on one. I know the Giant Seek 0 is a flat bar but its the gears I am more interested in testing out. Only saying these 2 as unless others know different I do not know a place locally (Leicestershire) that I can see a on-one pomp.

Off topic ....Piemaster- I noticed your qoute in sig.....your local team Hull has one of our ex managers. Mind you that wouldn't be too difficult the way Mandaric gets rid of them !!

Well I've just used the Pomp frame and transferred my 9 speed hub gear to that, and FINALLY have my front dynamo wheel, must say it looks very swish, shame I haven't got any dynamo lights yet. Sorry I digress, I commuted 40 miles a day on the 9 speed in a Surly Crosscheck frame, I also did most of my solo rides on it as well. I generally used the lighter weight derailler bike for the long social rides, bar one. That involved some seriously rough roads, so I took the 9 speed. I think I covered just over 100 miles, overnight, and only used a max of 6 of the gears. Never needed the bottom and, at that time, the top two were just too big, both being over 100 inches.

In my view the Alfine 8 would be fine for long rides of that nature, remember you can always vary the gearing by changing rings or cogs. If you have Alfine fittings then their 18t cog with the 39t ring gives a very good spread.

Focus have a flat barred bike on their site from their 2011 range (+ alfine 11 and a belt drive if you fancy it). The distributer is wiggle but doesn't seem to selling them as yet. Looks more MTB styled though.

Nigel Pearson. I like him a great deal and he is starting to get things to happen for us. Not expecting too much this season - been far too many off pitch problems.

I spotted that Focus flat bar bike from another forum and it does look interesting with 11 gears and belt drive. I expect the price will be much higher than 1K though but you never know. I might give Wiggle a call to see if that bike is likely to make it to the UK any time soon.
