What shorts are you wearing? If you have a back injury is a fairly aggressive road bike the wisest option? What's up with your back? Is the bike hurting your back? Your softer nether regions? The former I can't see why it would be the saddle? If the latter it could be, but after 4 miles with good shorts seems odd to me

I don't know if they are any good or not. They were about £20 from Halford's.

The back injury is old. I broke th è coccyx and next vertebrae up. It's mended but aches. It does mean I sometimes find it hard to know where pain is coming from.

I hope the bike will not hurt my back...!

..and yes it was my bum etc which was hurting. My back does not generally hurt cycling even after 50 miles.

As said previously, swapping your hybrid saddle to the road bike should do the trick.
If you don't like this solution for any reason, try other saddles, but don't stay with the one that's painful, would only spoil your cycling.

£20 is inexpensive for shorts if wanting to go long distances, although if you were ok doing 50 miles in them on the hybrid, as others have said, swap the saddle over

I tend to go for shorts that cost £40 or so but that have been reduced from £70+. Assume you are wearing them without undies. If it's your bum, sit bones, that are sore, then it's likely the saddle is the wrong width and has the wrong padding for you

@buggi the Silique comes with a bontrager WSD saddle. They actually work well for me as a brand, unlike specialized for example. But they come in 3 widths and the one supplied may not be the right width for the OP so back to the shop she should go
It's probably the smallest one. I've got a bonty now and its dead comfy but its not the smallest size. I have child bearing hips... My sit bones are a mile apart!

Hello. Update time ☺

I went back to the bike shop and he swapped the original saddle for one which was wider at the back but not quite as soft and wide as my hybrid saddle. It felt a bit better even in the shop.

I was sent off with the same instructions as last time... try it out for a week or two and come back if it's still uncomfortable.

On saddle one I manages two short rides (total 10 miles) which both ended in actual tears (a bit girly).

On saddle two I have also been on two rides... One of 23 miles and one of 28. It's much more comfortable to sit on but I'm left with almost crippling pain behind my right knee. Now I'm sure this is not specifically saddle related but it blimming well hurts.

Can you suggest whether I need to return again to the bike shop or whether it is more likely to be my legs hurting due to new riding position. (I should add it's an ache now but while I was riding today it felt like a pulled muscle type pain).

Thanks people

did you have a bike fit? is the saddle height the same?

I had a full bike fit when I bought my bike, when I changed the saddle the new selle italia is much thicker than the original prologo which meant I needed to have the seat lowered and moved back slightly.

Are you riding with clipless pedals? Is it just the one knee? Any previous injuries or knee pain?

They did a bike fit when I initially bought it and he put it down 1.5cm to accommodate for the extra padding when he swapped it.

My right knee is much worse when riding but they both ache now (the right one is worse).

I wear normal trainers because otherwise I'd end up on the floor everytime I stopped hehe!
