Didn't Hoy advertise Bran Flakes, he didn't quite make the grade for Shredded Wheat.

Now if he had only won a grand tour as well..!

Yes I believe he used to advertise Bran Flakes, I haven't seen him for a while though !

The Tour is the important one.

It's where the legends live...

that is my view entirely. People remember cyclists from the TDF because they make their name there.
Look at Thomas Voekler. He will always be remembered for his courage and tenacity in the TDF.
Olympics dont have that "panache".
Does anyone remeber olympics cyclists from 50 years ago? They do from the TDF.

Wiggins has said that he's riding the vuelta this year and then the world TT champs just afterwards which is a very similar time gap as to the tour and olympics next year. He said it'll give him a good indication of how he'll be feeling form wise after a grand tour.

It isn't an easy choice, given that it could very well be his last chance at either. However, it will certainly be his last for the Olympics, whereas that would not be 100% certain in the case of the Tour. He may well plan for both, but if it turns out he can't, that fact might sway him.

Road cycling does not fit the criteria to be an Olympic Sport, neither does football which is why football teams are U23 with upto three exceptions.

Tour>Worlds>local club's time trial on a Thursday night>Olympics.

But since cycling is an Olympic sport, the winner should receive a jersey to wear until the next one happens.

Also from Wiggins point of view, he should train for the Tour, withdraw if he isn't looking likely to win it and focus on the Olympics instead.

Sadly success for UK sport, including British Cycling, is judged only by Olympic medal tally.

Hopefully, the more Cav does at grand tours the better the chance we have of changing opinion, generating interest etc

I was surprised by how many closet armchair TdF fans I came across this year. I think the profile is rising.

Success on the track has a downside.

People think we have no need to race and train on the road as we can stay out of the way in a velodrome.
I think that Brailsford sees it as part of his job to change that, but, again, a lot of our aspirations are formed by what we see on the telly and in print. Nicole Cooke is, arguably, as successful a rider as Victoria Pendleton, but she has less than a hundredth of the exposure.

(For the record, I follow Ms. Pendlleton in Grazia, not FHM.......)

And, yes. Reg Harris. My grandfather was always going on about Reg Harris. Orange juice and champagne!

The reason for that is not the difference between the Olympics and road racing but is almost entirely because of the dominance of the male gaze in the media - i.e. Pendleton is conventionally attractive and plays the game, whereas Cooke isn't and doesn't.

I paraphrase, but Cav noted this morning in his phone on R5L that the Olympics, in the history of cycling mean very little though as a Brit they take on greater significance for 2012. He also made nice noises about the team that'll be there.

I thought he sounded unconvinced as to the merits of competing to be honest. He certainly didn't sound like a man keen to sacrifice tour stage wins for a chance in the Olympics again.

In other news he also said he's decided where he's going next year. But wouldn't say what the decision was.
