Why has no other manufacturer carried the design on?

Because they were banned, smarta##e.

It does seem strange that in most other aspects of life - new designs, materials, ideas have been used to improve what we do and use, the bicycle seems to be the same basic design as its always been, barring the "penny farthing".
The zipp bikes that you sometimes see on eBay, were they banned too?

Basically, anything that wasn't a classic diamond frame with standard handlebars was banned. They relaxed the rules a bit last year, hence the renewed interest in the Hour record.

As above. Which is why you no longer see too many bikes like the Trimble, Slingshot or Softride around any more. All outlawed by the UCI...

The bans in the early 2000's or whenever it was were really odd. There were two separate sets of rules/restrictions. For TTs they allowed various innovations like (non-superman) aero bars and disk wheels and stuff (but not monocoque frames like this one), so restrictive but not insane. But for the hour record they really went to town winding the clock back requiring almost a 1970s spec bike with non aero spoked wheels and so forth. That was why interest in the hour record died for many years.

It wasn't 'almost' 1970s spec, it was specifically 1972 spec, based on the equipment available to Merckx when he set the record.

The idea was that they wanted the Hour to be a 'pure' athelete's record, not an arms race.

Thanks for all the input guys. The latest on the bikes is a that my friend has been In touch with a guy in Canada (he runs the Olymipic bobsled team) who is interested in looking at them with a view to exhibiting them at cycle events. This would help generate a regular income from them as apposed to a one off sale and parting with her cherished posesions.

My friend runs a charity organisation so the money raised will be used to benifit this.
So you may see the at cycle exhibitions up and down the country in the future

I can understand that, I'm no good at letting go of stuff either.

That would be a fitting course of action with those, the more people who get to see them, the better.

I am a semi professional frame builder (giving diy frame building classes for bamboo and carbon frames). As project for the winter I would love to build a replica of the Lotus 108. For that purpose I would love to do a 3D scan or to get pictures of the frame taken from specific angles. It would be great if somebody could help me get oh contact with an owner of such a bike, preferably in Europe. You can contact me through email: Alex@bambooride.com
