I'm a bit luddite when it comes to scoffing enough grub and drink to get me through my rides. In a moment of desperation, I tried some oozing green energy gel and a similarly intentioned drink, and it just felt wrong on a monster scale. So - does anyone have any food ideas that have a more traditional slant but are bouncing in easily accessible, hill-defeating energy? I'm thinking warm banana sandwiches, kendal mint cake, flapjack with a LOT of golden syrup - that kind of thing... What's your secret weapon?

Also, anyone give me a rough yardstick as to how much liquid I should be drinking when I'm out?

Cheers,

Luke

Find a shop with "Patisserie" above the door.

Never forget the importance of carbohydrates.
Fried, cut-up potato ones are good, or wheat-based baked ones containing pork products.
But Baggy is right about Eccles cakes too.

Yes yes yes! I always knew sausage rolls were good for you. I'll take the eccles cake recommendation as gospel too...

I was actually thinking of a bacon roll, but sausage rolls are good too...
Either the sausage-in-a-roll, or sausage-meat-baked-in-pastry form.
I can personally vouch for the sustaining power of ham, egg and chips.

I often take a bag of mixed nuts and seeds, a banana and a snickers bar... Sounds quite boring after the previous offering though.

I thought the OP was asking about 'energy pills for hills'.

Yes. Get yourself down to your local Indian Sweet shop. They will let you taste before you buy.

The stuff that looks like white Duplo Bricks with green spots is Pistachio Barfi.

Made with Condensed milk and sugar, heated and allowed to solidify.
Actually quite easy to make at home. It can be cut into bite size chunks and is, unlike Kendal Mint Cake, soft enough to 'melt in your mouth'.

But watch out, the stuff is addictive.

Fig rolls are good. I take them along on the FNRttC and they've never let me down for the Saturday morning ride home. I reckon a standard packet of about 15 is good for around 100 miles.

Jelly Babies & Jelly Beans for a quick boost & Soreen cut into chunks.

Like fig rolls too, but the kids eat them before I get to use them on rides, generally.
