Oil for the bike

Until recently I've been able to buy small containers of light oil for the bike from pound shops in town, but recently none seem to be stocking it. I'm assuming this is to do with the price of oil and that most likely, this source has dried up for the forseeable future.

Can anyone recommend a good oil to use for general bike purposes and places where it can be obtained at reasonable cost?

Wilkinson do a good all round oil about £1.20 for decent sized bottle. It's in their cycling section.

They say it's suitable for chains, and I use it on the kids bike chains, but on my own, I only use it for lubing cables, derailleurs, etc.

I know the one you mean - have bought it before, but last time I looked in the Derby Wilko's, I couldn't find it any more. Have you bought it recently? If so, I'll ask them next time I'm in.

I bought it 18 months ago and I saw it a couple of weeks ago in Leeds City Centre.

It's made my Weldtite so it sounds the same as what John the Monkey recommends.

Was reading a cycling magazine from 1895 last night and it clearly said that the best oil for your bike was sperm.

From the eponymous whales, one assumes.

I bought some today £1.16. I'll be using it for lubing cable runs, etc, too.

i seen a review on cycling weekly were dry and wet lube was tested and dry lube just won but the chain was still rusted and a bit corroded, as long as you apply the correct amount and wipe the chain when applying to remove excess, then correctly do the maintainence it will preserve the life of the chain and parts a good while longer and less chance of running into bother. Ive used all sorts of oils, the best at present is letting my chain soak in castrol engine oil then letting excess drip of and wipe lightly any excess left but also using finish line at the moment, Any one tried this no flats joe, rock n roll or pedros go lube ?
