To make Google Maps available off-line choose "Make Available Offline" in the main menu. then it invites you to draw a box round the region to be downloaded.

Others use OSMAnd

I've used 'MapsWithMe', and found it quite good. There's a free version which gives good functionality, or you can pay a little which gives you the ability you to use the search tool. There are maps for a lot of the world, which you download country (or state) at a time. The only downside is that the downloaded maps take up a fair bit of space, so you'll need a large SD card.

I've got some of Google maps offline, but the maximum area is a bit restricted.

I've had little trouble with using it online, and always carry paper maps just in case.

I use NavFree - it's designed as a sat nav app but as the maps are all stored on the phone (off-line) I can also use it to plot routes, find myself etc

Forgive the question .... But why the need for offline maps???
Phone OUT, GPS ON, google maps ..... Get your bearings and off we go.

We have hundreds and hundreds of road signs, telling us which way to go .....

(Hope that doesn't offend anyone)

Because where I cycle there is rarely a 3G phone signal which most of the map apps rely on :-)

I tend to take a screen shot of maps for the bits of my route that i dont know and save them as photos on my phone so I can refer to them whilst in the deep countryside.

I have used a lot of new lanes recently and found a lot of road signs pointing the wrong way, if I didn't have a map to refer to I would still be out there tonight!

you can make reasonably large offline maps in google maps, I kinda just tile them around where I live a bit like paper maps do. So for example a local map, a map to the east, another to the north etc

because i am on payg mobile as i do not use a phone much as i am not glued to the phone like most people seem to be these days and if i want to download anything i tend to hook it up to my home wifi .
It is a nice feature to have on a phone with gps if you do not want to pay for data charges.

I also live in the countryside where there are not that many signs or 3g etc so if your lost on a country lane miles from home and you do not know whereabouts you are you are lost.

Another vote for offline maps - I have the whole of the UK in the 1-50000 OS on my phone (and on a Google Nexus 7 too) - using Mem Map maps (the previous qct series) and the Alpinequest app. Excellent - no phone signal issues.

I've tried to use Google maps but have not gotten it work without a data connection. Even with maps downloaded, it still seems to want a connection to route.

I use Sygic and find it to a very complete and professional product. You do have to buy it but there is trial period so you can assess it first for free. It does lock up or loose the GPS connection periodically requiring a reboot but I suspect that could be due to my phone rather than a software problem.
