Ok thanks, what is a suitable oil/grease?
Anything really. 3 in 1, a dribble of motor oil, what ever grease you've got lying around the shed. It's only the smallest smear. A touch on the outer edge of the seal, where it touches on the hub, probably won't go amiss either, in case the seal is being moved by the rotation of the wheel and is rubbing there.

The noise is almost certainly coming from the rear hub not the front. I bet the rear hub does have a rubber seal on the left side; they get dry and they set up a constant high-pitched squeak.
