(According to my mate) If you scaled the universe down so the sun was the size of a conker, the earth would be a fleck of dust orbiting at about an inch, and the next nearest star would be five miles away.

In the 'I Spy Book of British Rivers' - 1962 edition - you could score 50 points for seeing a dead cow floating on its back, with its legs in the air, on a river in full flood.
It took me 4 years to get this top score, standing on my great uncle's verandah at Astley Burf on the River Severn.
It was a sight not to be repeated for another 35 years, by which time I had misplaced my I Spy book.

In medieval England, poverty was so great that the faces of the peasants became gaunt through starvation, and exaggerated the facial features, so things such as eyes looked huge.

As a taunt, the wealthy would shout out 'I spy, with my little eye' to show they were different.

An alternative origin to the phrase is that humans originally used the pineal gland as a third eye, which was smaller. Hence the need to mention the size of the particular eye being used.

I know we aren't supposed to fact check, but hold a conker an inch from your eye.

No, we're not. Damned unsporting of you. Anyway, I've been back to check, and I got it completely wrong. What he actually said was:

"If you scale a grain of sand down to represent the sun, then the earth would be a microscopically small object about an inch away and the next nearest star would be about 7 miles distant"

Let's see you fact check that away, you cad.

Oh no, I'm not doing any fact checking that requires work.

Christmas tree light bulbs are designed to fail randomly, ensuring that the owner has a fun-filled evening tracking down the faulty bulb in the string.
His wife, Mary, would send out little acknowledgement cards with every order, signing her name in beautiful copperplate writing. She never anticipated that these cards would become so popular.
of course the neighbours thought they where crackers
