In a study carried out on 20,000 Ostriches over a period of 80 years, no one reported a single case where one buried its head in the sand.

Yebbut but they said something similar about black swans

Every car handbook says "Please Read Before Driving", yet every single day people recklessly drive to work without first having read the manual cover to cover over their cornflakes.

Not one of the handbooks warn of the dangers associated with being in a rush and thinking you'll tie your shoe laces when you get to the traffic lights, only to find they're caught in the door and you can't reach the brake pedal.

'cough' according to a friend anyway...obviously...

Plessey introduced the first traffic light with completely solid state circuitry. Prior to that, the entire system was relay-controlled. This technological advance allowed them to deploy sophisticated (for the time) features, including a manual override sequence on the pedestrian crossing button to allow passing police constables to switch the lights immediately to alleviate traffic congestion, or to turn all lights red in the event of an accident.

Not many of the original systems are still in service, but those that still exist can be turned to “all red” by tapping in the rhythm of the theme to Z-Cars on the crossing button.
