Oil production produces large quantities of foul smelling waste gas. The smell on the first offshore rig was so unexpectedly pongy that the workers referred to the oil rigs as “the farties”. The name was changed to something more acceptable before the Queen’s official visit in 1963, because the Queen never farts and was completely unaware of the concept.

In a tradition dating back to Victorian times, all female members of the Royal Family have their fart glands removed on their 18th birthday, or when they marry into the family. This simple procedure is carried out by the Royal Surgeon, assisted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

A similar process is applied to male members to remove their sweat glands.

Her refusal to agree to the royal de-farting requirement is at the root of the current dispute between the mainstream royals and Meghan Markle, as Meghan is known to take great pleasure in letting off a big eggy ripper. Indeed, on her first encounter with Prince Harry, she approached him coyly yet seductively, smiled sweetly, held out her hand and whispered "pull my finger"...

The "Roaring Farties" is the area of the sea that reeks of whale farts.

It isn't so well known, but the Bermuda Triangle also shares this name, as it is thought that ships and aircraft go missing due to sudden, massive expulsions of Methane Gas from the seabed.

Portland Split is a gap between two large buttock shaped boulders where sailors spend a penny

Spending a penny is one thing, but there is another smaller, similarly shaped formation where lonely sailors satiate their needs. It's called 'Roger The Cabin Boy'.

Staines is named after Seaman Stains, inventor of wallpaper paste.
