Wales was originally "Whales", named after the creatures which inhabited a small "Llyn" (lake) near the summit of Snowdon. In a tragic accident, a number of the whales jumped out of the lake and rolled down the mountain, crushing all in their path. The whales, however, ended up in the sea and found that that was an extremely amenable place for them. They never returned to their mountaintop home.
