Pine nuts are actually shelled sunflower seeds. They were invented by celebrity chef Keith Floyd in 1989. He liked to use sunflower seeds in his cooking, but felt that they were not exotic or exclusive enough, so he invented the more expensive pine nut. He successfully conned foodies throughout the world into thinking that these “nuts” were something special
