His name was Gaius Iulius Caesar - so Caesar was about as close to a family name as you got in Republican Rome. Wikipedia reminds me that there are several interpretations as to the origin of the name.

Most of the first few emperors were adopted into the family, so took on the name that way; later it became a sort of honorific title.
