They are offering these discounts for their own commercial benefit because they want you as a customer and they are happy for you to take advantage because it increases their profit so you are doing them a favor by taking advantage. It would be rather silly not to.

Isn't age discrimination illegal yet?

Make a test case of it.

As far as the op's question goes, all those organisations are private organisations and use it partly as a marketing tool. If it started costing them too much money they wouldn't do it. I have absolutely no moral issues about accepting the discounts, even though I do not need them.

I have a bus pass and a ferry card which gets me a return to Oban by public transport for £1.50.
I also have a discount on ferry fares for my car[ but not due to age] which is a considerable saving. I never give my age although my date of birth is the only ID the local surgery needs.

Similarly I know people who use student discount whilst being in full time employment and taking night courses.
It’s just a benefit, so use it.

I did that when I did evening classes about 15 years ago, bought Microsoft Office for something like £10 as an eligible student.

My 70 year old brother in law retired, took his pension and then went back to his old job part time as a consultant. He also claims student dicounts as he works for a university.
So........he's on a state pension, a works pension, an income from his job which is more than he got full time and he's claiming student discounts.
He's also as tight as a duck's arse.
God knows what he does with all the money!

I thought that ageism is now a hate crime. I may have imagined that.

As you were....

He's saving it until he needs it, then if the worst happens & he goes before you, he has it written into his will that you are to be advised exactly how much he has, that you are not getting your hands on it & giving it all to his cat, but you know he's only doing it to really pee you off.

Even though I'm now in my late sixties I don't see a lot of this stuff, Saga is the only one I see regularly.
