So I booked my bike in for a mudguard fitting at my LBS . Im really pleased with the look and quality of these Raleigh Elements Mudguards, however when I went to collect my bike, the guy thought he'd just mention to me before I notice after leaving the shop that he had to modify the mudguard arms whatever you call them. So there are two bends on the disc break side and looks like they've been attached to the front rack eyelets. I was told becuase of the location of the hole next to the disc breaks it would have been arkward to attach the arm and screw it in. Arms on other side are normal. He said if I'm not happy can bring the bike in again and he'll sort something out. What do you all think. Reckon it looks ok or not ?

Sorry to say, but I think it looks horrible. I fitted mudguards to a Trek 7.2 Fx Disc by bending the stay around the caliper slightly. The mudguards were borrowed from my old Raleigh so I bought some new ones. The stays on the new ones were shorter than the old Raleigh ones and wouldn't reach the mudguard once I had bent them. I never got round to fitting them as I sold the bike, but I had 2 plans. 1. I bought some 1mm (I think) metal rod from B&Q for £2 so I could make a new stay. 2. If that didn't work, I was going to get some standoffs to attach the stays over the top of the caliper. I still have them on an ebay saved list - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291169910104

I hope that helps. I would take them up on their offer to find a better solution and you can perhaps point them in the right direction if you're happy with either solution.

To be honest this is what I thought they were going to do using spacers etc and having them look equal on both sides. That was my main reason for having them fit it as thought it would be too much hasle and know what a fiddly job it can be. I've seen some great mods on here. How do you attach the stays to the stand off and what is the stand off. I'm learning this bike terminology. And yes I will be taking it back as I know it will bug me. Cheers for your responses.

This is how it's generally done:

http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/blog/25/01/12/mudguards-tyres-for-your-genesis-cross-bike

Instead of standoffs, I did mine with a stack of nuts acting as a spacer. I needed to put two bends in the stays to make it neat and get the angles correct. I'll take some photos when I get the chance. Fixing to the rack mount with bent stays like that looks as though it would be difficult to perform any side to side adjustment of the guard*.

*Edit: Actually, looking at the bend in them I'm nor sure that's actually much of a problem. It might be, were they straight.

Thank you very much for the link, I appreciate it. And yes please send some photos when you get the chance. Let's hope they just replace the guards as don't want anymore corrective bends in the metal wires ?

How do you attach the stays to the stand off and what is the stand off.

The standoff is the metal piece I linked to. You just use a longer bolt that goes through the standoff and screws into the threaded eyelet on the bike as per @winjim 's link. Using nuts does the same job, but standoffs look neater.

Pretty simple really the way you've explained it. I'll take all this info including link from Genesis site to show them . So hopefully they'll just take a set of wire from the other guards they have in stock. Will update when sorted out. These forums really do come in handy

I suspect they've been trimmed, and are now not long enough to fit with a stand off spacer, even if fully straightened.
They have bent them to fit but I do believe if you shorten something by bending it, if you then straighten it afterwards, lo and behold it is longer again, ( some weird phenomenon, no just physical reality )....How many night caps have you had.........

Have a look at the picture again. I'd be amazed if the top part of the stay was still long enough to reach as far as the mudguard, when attached to the mudguard eye on the drop out, where it should be. Part of the stay has clearly been trimmed, and I don't even need to hold a ruler up to the screen to see that. How many night caps have you had?
