Clothing is critical to feeling comfortable when the weather turns cold. If you make sure that your hands, feet and head are warm that's most of the battle - so good gloves, overshoes if you're using cycling shoes and headband/skull cap are essential. Then any wind proof jacket will keep you warm (but this will create the possibility of getting chilled as you sweat so sweat-wicking layers will help for longer rides) and leg warmers/tights for the legs.

I find the biggest problem is feeling warm enough at 0900-0930 will be too warm at 1200 when the sun's out and the day gets hotter. So get clothes that can be rolled down/unzipped/quickly taken off.

I don't know, these soft Scottish lasses these day, they don't make em like they used too

Top Tip Mitchy

Grab bike, open door, get out, complain when you get back home to hubby

you could always wear a buff to keep the cold off your ears and it won't feel tight under your cycle helmet

Now get out on that bike

None of you should feel guilty. I haven't been out for almost a month and to be honest have just lost the desire in this cold weather, especially as limited time means that most of my cycling is taking the scenic route to the station at 6 in the morning. I was keen last year and kept on going, but this year the dark, cold, pot holes and ice just don't cut it for me and I've reverted to the gym. I'm sure it'll come back, but I've decided to give it a break until the New Year (although might be tempted over Christmas if the weather is okay),

I've done all of 6 miles in the past 3 weeks and it's horrendously boring being sat at home.

As soon as it defrosts I'm doing Lincoln and back, just to make up for lost milage

Been out last on Dec 9th - was hoping to ride coming weekend but snow is already forecast but maybe I am lucky. Still hoping to cover the last 50 miles to make up my original target ..... not a lot but itching to get on the bike ....

Just got back into cycling, but have not been out for 4 weeks!
Too cold for me as I have not got any proper cycling clothing yet.

I'm on a train all week because I'm doing a course and I'm really missing my bike. Looking at the forecast I'll just get home to get snowed on as well this weekend

I'm trying but without being able to reasonably go out after work cos it's pitch black, it just leaves weekends which have been messed up by snow and ice recently.

Being fairly new back to cycling everything means more expense so it's been difficult trying to learn what I need then afford it as well. I am getting there though!

Got a couple of rides and some (more) purchases in last weekend which was a chore but worth it in the end.

Think socks and overshoes are going to be next. Life was far easier in summer!

My Allez is still in hibernation! More snow now and very icy roads. I'll stick to the spin bike in the gym and dream of summer!

"Ditto" My bike has not moved in three weeks. I actually got it ready the other day for a ride out and by the time I'd checked the tyres gave the chain a quick oils and got it out of the garage it was snowing again, so being my usual wimpy self back into the garage it went. I can handle cold or even wet, but not both at the same time.

I would be climbing the walls  if i did not ride even with the "are you mental in this weather" label i still ride over the use of the car which looks like a nice ice sculpture in the drive !
I feel your pain peeps.
