My favourite was 'volcano adventure' cos I used to love volcanos when i was a kid.
When I explained what the books were about to my parents, they refused to buy me any of them - from what I recall they were all about two blokes going around catching animals for the world's zoos and fighting off the natives. My parents always hated the idea of zoos so that was probably what did it.

yh yh i used to read these i have a few upstairs too, i bought some for my youngest but he hsn't got in to them. Rev R W awdry with the thomas the tank engine books were great.

and the moomins?

Why would they be collecting animals on a volcano - especially (IIRC) with a mental volcano-scientist?

Lot's of good stuff covered, to which I'd add:

Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series; and
S E Hinton's Outsiders and Rumblefish.

Hi all. I still enjoy reading Arthur Ransome and Captain W.E. Johns if I come across a copy of either of thier books. In fact a friend of mine has a box set of Arthur Ransome books including Swallows and Amazons (my favorite) which I sometimes borrow off him.
Arch I am really envious of you having a full set of Willard Price Adventure series:biggrin:. Used to read him a lot as well.

Although I have to confess that I spent a lot more time listening to music and drawing/painting than reading books.

Not sure what age we're talking about here, but has anyone nominated the Rev. W. Awdry yet? I still (whisper it) find myself flicking through the Thomas the Tank Engine books even today. Can't wait to read them to my young nephew.
Or Richard Scarry. I remember his books being really good too.
When I got a bit older I remember hoovering up Famous Five books like they were going out of fashion. (Which, as it turns out, they were.) I also read lots of Nevil Shute, Alistair McLean and Douglas Adams books, but that was when I was maybe fourteen, so it doesn't really count.

Honourable inclusions for Douglas Adams, Tom Sharp and Sue Townsend.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about them! And Roald Dhal, whose "Danny the Champion of the World" is possibly my favourite book ever. I read it over and over again when I was young.
