Nooo, headset fallen down steerer tube

no point in trying the stud methods mentioned. it's designed to go in but not be pulled out, that's it's job. carbon fibre steerer?

the only way, that i can think of, is to use a stiff wire (coat hanger?) to try and 'flip' it over and then it will come out (upside down). if it's a carbon steerer if at any time it feels like it's snagging tight, start again, carbon is strong but is easily damaged.

i've used this method before, but only on alloy and steel mtb forks.

hope that helps.

True. Which is why I was wondering how it 'got so low' - so it is possibly 'loose' enough to pull upwards?

If it fell in it'll fall out. Find a stick long enough to reach it , turn the fork upside down - every time it catches and stops give it a gentle poke with your tickling stick. The wedge should soon find its way out.

Do you know about neodymium magnets? They are insanely powerful, but I don't know how well they might work on curved surfaces. Is your steerer all carbon? What is the internal diameter? Is the widget you want to recover steel? I have some spare magnets that might fit down the tube. Go fishing with some nylon thread. Send me a PM with your address and you might get one by the weekend.

I would have loved to have seen you waving the forks around, I bet you looked a bit crazy!

Glad you got it out!

Would I be better off getting one of these ?

As I dont think it could fall down in the same way this one did
I may be wrong, but I'd say that star-nut is meant for a metal steerer. It just has a bling carbon cap.

Totally useless. Cannot tighten and slides out. Buy something else if you don't want to kill your carbon fork. I will try the FSA Compressor or the Columbus Carbon Fork Bung.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Take a good look at the bung before you insert it. The ones I have used need expanding slightly before putting into the steerer, then tightening so that they are firm before you even think of preloading the steerer using the top cap bolt. It is worth dismantling the plug to understand how it works and to grease the inner threads. It is very easy to snap the bolt that pre tightens the plug. You do not use the top cap bolt to tighten the plug into the steerer. (I suspect this is what the reviewer was trying to do).

Just use the plug that you already have but this time inset it with the bike lying on its side or even upside down and tension the plug before putting the bike back onto it's wheels. It's easier to insert the plug with the Allen key already inserted.
