Just fitted the butterfly bars kindly donated by @Alan O (having never seen butterfly bars before, I managed to fit them both upside down and back to front) and the brake levers and shifters:

I need to have a bit of a mess about to make sure they're in the right position.

Now for the third item on my "Things I'm Not Looking Forward To" list: fitting the cables.

Wish me luck!

Should have gone single speed - you'd only have brakes to fit

There's really four different ways you could mount butterfly bars - swept up, swept down, bar ends towards you or away from you. I think I've seen them mounted all ways, and there's nothing to say you shouldn't go for whatever works best for you - but I think you have them mounted the most conventional way in that photo.

"I'm not having something dirty on the bike that which will get oil and crud all over it when I ride anyway, and nor am I cleaning it - instead I'll hacksaw part of the handle off my mop and bodge on this other one"

I like your style
It's a style that has been perfected over many decades.

It seemed like a logical solution in my head anyway!

I'll have them like that for starters and see how comfortable they are, nothing to stop me moving them in the future I suppose.

I do like the look of them though, thanks again.

I was all ready to make a start on the gear cables but I appear to have misplaced the BB cable guide. A trip to the shops is required.

Halford's do a Campagnolo cable guide but it says it's for oversized shells. Any idea if it'll fit?

I like Skol

A Minging Manc...
The sun is past the yard arm so I thought why the hell not.
 It's a slippery slope, wait till you are having a quick can or two at breakfast time before escorting your kids to junior school! In my defence I do work night shifts. I'm sure the mums in the school playground giving me disapproving looks while they shuffle a little further away, as I stand there quietly belching beery fumes, didn't know that...….

EDIT: Bike is coming together nicely by the way. Next time challenge yourself by ordering hubs, spokes and rims separately :okay:

You sure you never done this before ? You look like you have this bike building lark in the bag. Not sure i'd have as much luck mind. ;)
You sure have given me a few thing's to think about. I better step away from the MacBook before I end up clicking on a few things
It is definitely my first time and it's gone a lot more straightforward than I thought it would (famous last words).

I've been swotting up for the last couple of months and it helped that I had the experience of taking the old bike apart (although I wish I'd have taken more photos).

Dive in and have a go, you'll love it.

Cheers.

I think the wheel building will have to wait a while. I do have the hubs from the original bike though so never say never.

I had to drive over to Hinckley to get one (shame it's purple) and it seemed rude to drive past the pub on the way home.

I bought a shiny new bolt for my seatpost as well to replace the original quick release one.

Really helpful chap in Bikes and Sports in Hinckley, the Halford's fella didn't know what I was talking about! I did pick up some Altura baggy shorts with padded liner while I was in there though. 30% off clothing at the moment so it came to £28. Bargain.
