I just thought I'd share a few thoughts about today's first fettle.

I think if I ever attempt this sort of thing again, I'll either buy the correct tools or take it to the LBS. There were far too many opportunities to cause damage to the frame or parts to risk that again.

I'm chuffed to bits to have completed the first phase without any help but I think I may have used up all my credit with Lady Luck.

You're dead right to be chuffed!
I would have thought that the headset was going to be one of the trickiest part of the whole build. So, well done to you!
The problem with buying tools is that they can turn out to be more expensive than the whole bike!

Just one more day at work then I'm all yours! I'll be attempting to fit the bottom bracket this afternoon then take it from there.

No more cigars though, I sound like Barry White this morning.

Hopefully the powder coaters covered up the BB space properly and you'll have no issues with the threads.
From my limited experience, I found the threads for the BB to be very delicate. Slowly, slowly is all I can suggest.

Good luck!

They did cover it (I called and made sure for my own peace of mind) but not particularly well. There has been a certain amount of paint ingress that I'm going to try to clear by (carefully) screwing in the original BB. Hopefully this should clear the threads (unless someone has a better idea). I'll try to take some photos in a mo. I'm just having a quick, thirst quenching lager first as I couldn't resist going for a quick blast after work in this lovely weather.

As promised:

As you may be able to see, there's a certain amount of fouling of the threads.

Some rust in there.

Some frames have drain holes, some haven't.

Some people spray Waxoyl inside of the frame when doing a refurb, some don't.

I've never bothered and some of my frames are 40 years old, but they are pretty well free of any significant internal rust.

Your choice.

OK, I'm having a bit of a struggle with this. There appear to be small metal particles welded into the threads. I'm not sure if you'll be able to see what I mean on this photo:

I've tried threading in the old BB but it just seems to be stripping it's threads. I have to admit I'm a bit stumped. I have a small metal pick I'm going to use to try and clear it but, if that doesn't work, I'm buggered.

Any ideas appreciated.

I used a pin to clean out the threads.
I also flushed it out with water, used a green scrubber, more water and eventually used an air compressor to dry it & blow it out. Several times.

You may need to retap it, but if you can clear the threads you'll be good to go.

I even found that too much lube caused problems.

Check the threads on the BB too.
