With fairness to phone cameras, depends on the phone and the situation (lighting etc). Comparing my Moto X Play (21MP sensor) with my (old, cheap, but quality) Fujifilm FinePix AV100 (12MP), sometimes the 'proper' camera kicks the phone into the dust- digital 'zoom' is hopeless compared to an optical one. Control over ISO etc is always handy. But, when I have both handy, and I've shot the same exact same scene with both, the phone has often won. Compare and contrast (quite literally) these shots of 'Mad Jack' Fuller's mausoleum at Brightling...
Clear phone win, in these circumstances.....
