Where are you? I have never in 44 years of cycling and racing ever met the type of cycle shop you talk about. Maybe a car shop that sells bikes or a toy shop that does the same, but never a bonafied cycle shop.

Also it is only your safety I am thinking about.

All of them have been bike shops (apart from one that was Halfords, but I wasn't expecting much - that was when he didn't understand what a fork was (and the only time I didn't have it in my hand because I was there for car stuff), but it was the guy who does the "work" on bikes). One in Bristol seemed to understand what I wanted and had stuff in stock, but they were all carbon and out of my budget. Edinburgh cycles were the first one to "order" a pair (thats where I got the bike). One local one in manchester (cycle Doctor i think) seemed like they knew what they were talking about - they had a look at my bike after the first accident and told me Edinburgh cycles were talking rubbish and my fork was fine. After the second I had moved to Bristol so couldn't go back. . At the moment I live in Portsmouth - of the three local bike shops I've tried two didn't sell forks at all, and one sold me this (after a 5 weeks waiting)... I'm moving up to Edinburgh for three months in a few weeks, so I can't afford to leave my bike at a shop for parts to get "ordered".

It doesn't look like the headset race pictured. Here is a photo:

and side by side with the replacement:

Also, they don't look like long reach calipers to me, maybe I'm wrong though: It says "57mm clearance" in the bike description.

My bike is an old model (pretty much same components I believe though) of this: http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/revolution-continental-sport-11?bct=browse/bicycles/road-bikes

Could your old fork possibly have a tapered steerer?

Your new fork has the regular design, with a consistent width through-out. Are you able to measure the two widths of the steerer on the old fork?

I took the race off, it measures 30mm inside diameter, the rest of the stem measures 28mm outside diameter. That said, it isn't tapered like that, more stepped. And only by 2mm!

Have you measured the inside diameter of the crown race on the new fork? As well as the diameter of the rest of the steerer tube on the new fork.

Most 1 1/8th steerers use a 30mm inside diameter crown race, for ease of fitting it, I believe - Which means the forks have to have a slightly wider section at the bottom of the steerer. Maybe your old fork is just an odd design in this area, with a taller wider section for the crown race?
