you cant have a thread about toasters without this tale....

origonally posted by @theclaud some time ago , but well worth repeating...

Call that a disaster? There's a guy in the pub I work in who came in with a burn across the bridge of his nose. He had got back from the pub the night before and fancied cheese on toast, but couldn't be arsed to put the grill on. So he'd lain the toaster on its side, toasted the bread lightly, placed the cheese on top and carefully placed the whole lot back in the side-down toaster. All rather ingenious until he got impatient and decided to peer into the toaster to see how it was getting on, when he was suddenly reminded in abrupt nose-searing fashion that eye-level grills do not normally fire their toasted contents at your face when they consider them done. I forgot to ask whether he opted for Worcester Sauce or Mustard

Make sure it will toast a warburton's toastie properly - most miss the top.

We've got a known make, black and stainless and does the job, 4 for toast, 7 for crumpets. Our best one was written off when one of the cats decided to climb the kitchen cupboards, and puked up over the side and straight into the toaster.

Surely, if the OP is buying a Dualit toaster or similar he needs to maintain standards with a Dualit level bread.

Maybe a £10 artisan loaf that you have to cut yourself, because slicing it at the point of sale would embellish the favour?

Unless you're in a desperate hurry, I'd do some googling to decide on a candidate, then log an eBay search and wait. It's the kind of thing people get twice as wedding gifts, then sell #2 for half price.

We've got a Russell Hobbs metal toaster (chrome).

It does 4 slices, can handle crumpets an thick slices, browning control and defrost.

Probably £40, 10 years old in nearly daily use, I'd buy the same again deffinitely!.

I got in trouble with Mrs D when she caught me laying the toaster on its side to make cheese on toast.

We now have a nice Brevile toaster that looks nice, didn't cost a fortune, and is rounded so it doesn't lay easily on its side. Lord know when it was made though.

I think most flat surfaces (think window ledges, tips of microwave ovens etc) should be round surfaced so family members don't put their crap all over the place.

A few days in.....it toasts well, not going to say that it is significantly better than a cheap £50 toaster but it's far nicer to own.

Lots of nice touches, it all makes sense whereas the pop up ones didn't, exposed elements, wasted energy, crappy (guessing) toasting times, wanky design + plastic.

A Rolex is not expensive either.:okay:

I'm a great believer In buying the best you can reasonably afford, when possible. But over £120 for a Dualit would make me blanch a bit.
The flip side, we had a Dualit which was well used at my former employers and had occasion to replace a coup,e of elements, it should hold no fear for someone moderately handy...based on my experience.
That's why I would buy a classic Dualit if I could afford it. It's repairable.
