If you haven't already done it familiarise your self with a route in a quiet off peak time before you have to do it in the peak. Little things like finding you have to be in an outside lane or move out to avoid a pinch point/ pothole, etc is easier off peak.

Get yourself a good set of lights and reflectors, and some clothing like a jacket made for commuting. These often incorporate reflective strips as well. In summer, all of this is less necessary, but fall, winter and spring will be a safer commute for all if you have them.
