Brooks saddle. I've just replaced my Sele Royale saddle with another Brooks.

You can also get a Shimano 105 11-25 cassette that provides a tad bigger ratio than the 12 and IMO is better for cycling downhill. I keep a 12-27 in the bike box for when I do really steep sportives.

PS - lovely bike by the way. Is that the TK version?

I have to say the brooks look just doesn't do anything for me, not for this bike, and I'm not keen on having to break it in!

Gavin, on our recent CC ride I hit just under 40mph going downhill. I don't think I was on the 11 even then. I also quite like the closer spacing of the cassette so I think 12-25 would probably be fine for me. Anyway as it will be a present, I think it should be a ultegra cassette...

Yes it is the Tk. Very, very happy with it!

I've got a Spesh Pave carbon seat post with zerts inserts on my winter bike (the Sirrus), it was about £40 when I bought it and I've found it very comfortable. Saddle wise on the winter bike I went for a lower end Spesh Avatar and its fine for me but saddles are a very user specific thing.
My cassette is a bit too wide spaced as its only an 8sp but I like the 12-26 and hills, the majority oh the time I'm in the 25 or 24 and I found the 26 very useful when I got stuck in the 39t (middle) chain ring on a 21% hill. I had thought about changing it for a 11-23 but after talking to a club mate who had one (now in his garage only used a few times) I decided not to.
My summer bike is a compact (34/50) with a 12-25 (10sp) cassette I wouldn't entertain changing that at the moment, I like the ratio too much.

What speed is the Kinesis magnatom ?

When I was speccing the same Racelight Tk from Paul Hewitt, he suggested a Selle Italia XO Transam at £28. I believe there are Selle Italia dealers who have a selection of their sadles which you can fit and ride and try.

Now you've got me thinking, it is about time I got a new saddle...

At the moment it is 50/34 with a 11-23 cassette. I just feel the 25 would provide a comfort zone.

Don't you believe it. I hardly ever (can't even remeber the last time!) use the 25. Even on the biggest hills round here and there are some big ones, I don't even use it.

With a little bit of work, you'll be using the 23 and lower gears.

Having said that it is nice to have it in reserve. If I had to make your choice knowing the difference between 23 & 25, I'd spend my cash on something else.

Ignoring machismo completely for a moment, if you want the 25 and feel the need for it, then get it.

Admission: I ride a triple.

What I mean is how many cogs has the cassette has, ie what speed. My Bianchi has got a 50/34 chainring with a 12-25 cassette made up of 10 cogs (ie 10 speed) and I find that the perfect balance for me. My Sirrus offers a greater comfort zone a 12-26 cassette but it only has 8 cogs (8 speed) so sometimes the spacing between gears isn't ideal.

PS the extra gears are often a get out of jail card for some of the Scottish Hills.

On the last CC ride (see the elevation) I only found on one occasion that I really wanted another gear. However, I can imagine on longer hills I might just need that 25. I'm just not quite sure if I need to spend money on a new cassette or not. I probably need a few more 'longer' rides to be sure.
