One suggestion is to make sure that whatever you buy has a compact chainset (50/34) not 53/39. It is highly unlikely that a newbie will start happily on the bigger gears.
if you spend the cash and don;t like it you will get a good price secondhand in my experience
I have 2 Giant bikes, one road and one hybrid and love them both. Husband has the Giant defy 1 and loves it too. We looked at and tested a lot of bikes, and settled on giant. Their road bikes always seem to get good reviews on bike radar and in the cycling mags. If you buy direct from a Giant store you get 2 free services in the first year too and the frames are guaranteed for life.
