Hi everyone!

I'm currently thinking of buying a road bike for my commute to to work and college. As its my first road bike, im only experimenting so nothing too pricey... yet! I'm 6"2 and 18 years old, so does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really looking to spend under £200 as im a newbie! If not, any suggestions on websites,?

Thanks, Jacob

As in the other thread, a 2nd hand Triban 3 is the way to go for £200. If you can add £100 to that, you can have a new one instead

Don't forget that you will need to get other stuff too not just the bike. Helmet, padded shorts, bottle cage and bottle, spare tube, puncture patch kit, mini pump at a minimum.

For a bike purely to commute, the Carrera Subway from Halfords is a good shout. It's a flat-bar hybrid rather than a road bike though.

@JacobS088 as i always do i would look for a decent 2nd hand retro bike loads to choose from and £200 will get you a nice reynolds 531 framed bike no trouble at all that if you discovered in a few months you didnt like you should be able to get your money back no issue .

if local to me get in touch sure i could find a road bike you could try

I've just ordered the Tesco Piccadilly under the Clubcard Exchange offer, will report back in a few days to let you know what it's like!

The Viking Phantom looks very similar in different colours

Oh dear! Not sure it's worth advising further as the advice given thus far has been ignored, but I'll try anyway.

CANCEL IT!

The bike will be more trouble than it's worth, chose any old saying you want, buy cheap buy twice, it's cheap for a reason, there's no such thing as a free lunch etc, etc, etc.

If you insist on getting this bike then consider this, when it does go t!ts up your LBS will more than likely refuse to work on it, (rightly so IMO), and you'l be left with a bike you don't enjoy, that doesn't work properly, and it could easily put you off cycling for life.

As others have said already, if you have £200 to spend on a bike then choice number one should be a decent steel framed road bike, (ala biggs682), choice number two, a used Triban 3, (ala MikeW-71).

If a bike is being sold by a supermarket, Sports Direct, any catalouge etc, and you want a bike that will last, be reliable and also enjoyable to ride, do not buy one of theirs.

*looks up Vertigo Piccadilly

14.5kg

Halfords sell basic MTB's that are lighter than that. Cheap for a reason. I hope the gears work at least, but I have a bad feeling.

It might do as a commuter.

Got the Piccadilly, its great. Had no problems. As i said, im not a pro rider so i aint fussed about the weight, gears etc when all i will be doing is riding it 20min to work on a Sunday morning. I might not even enjoy cycling yet so im not going to buy a reaaalllyyy expensive bike when i might not even use it?

That's a fair question.

I did buy a hybrid bike 4 years ago with the intention of using it for commuting. I rode it a few times and it then lived in storage for the next 3 years. I then started riding it again with a bit more determination and got to love cycling again.

Then I bought a road bike. The hybrid has still only covered about 300 miles from new, my road bike has now done over a thousand in only 8 months

Enjoy the bike!
