ebay is a good place to find good bikes second hand, so long as you're prepared to do a bit of homework (google) and be patient if necessary. Go to 'advanced search'
and put in your postcode, then you'll get stuff close to you. Use auctionstealer.com to bid for you, so you don't get carried away and overpay. Choose carefully and you'll get a bargain, so when it's time (and you've built up the knowledge) to get something even better (and/or better suited to you) you'll be able to sell it for what you paid, or more. An option that's certainly not available if you buy new.
