I was recommended the MS from Dealextreme, just waiting on it now as it is in transit from China as we speak.

+1 for the Magic Shine.
I also have an Exposure joystick, which is not quite as bright (although it is brighter than the Hope 1), but very expensive. It is wonderfully small and compact though and very well made.

I used to borrow an Exposure Joystick and was just about to shell out £180 for one then heard about the Magichine MJ808. I bought one last year and have covered about 1500 night miles with it. It really is incredible value for money, lights up so much of the road, 30-40mph descents are no problem with it. Buy one now so you have it in time for autumn, then the delivery time will not bother you, $75 is a steal. The MJ808 is basically a rip off of the German made Tesla 5 which sells for over £250. There really is no contest, spend $75 (£50) and get the best light available, don't bother spending £30 on something that will turn out to be unsatisfactory at best. BTW i am not sponsored by Magicshine, just totally impressed by the value for money.

Another MJ808 user commuting on unlit country roads here. Bright enough to see potholes when flying at 30mph+ Excellent spread of light not just a bright spot.

The dealextream has its own batterie so when the batterie dies of death in a few years you need a new batterie

By that time the unit will be discontinued and you can't get a batterie or the batterie will cost £40 ish

The Hope Vision 1 takes AA batteries

You have the same problem with the magicshine. They may be great lamps though how do also charge these units on tour or miles away from home ?

The hope vision 1 can use easaly availble battteries from most shops or recharge ones from your bag

Actually it's just a case for a type of rechargeable battery that is readily available on the market. If it dies then you can just remove it from the case and buy a replacement. The battery is not specific to the magicshine brand.

I find the Hope is a bit of a fail because of the low voltage cut off meaning it's pants with rechargables.

I use a an unregulated tesco C Cell cheapy with the Seoul chip, runs at full beam for about 5 or 6 hours, it's still usable beyond that and it doesn't cut out.

I've recently bought a secondhand Hope vision 1.

On one bike it's used in addition to the dynamo light on the other it's now alone.

Yes it cuts out if the battery gets too low. With 2900 mAH AAs that's after about 3 hours. My rides in the dark are hardly ever more than 2 hours, and I put a new set in and recharge the used ones when I get in.

My maximum speed is rarely above 20 mph and I've found it perfectly good up to that. I had no problem seeing every pothole and bump on the way down 300m vertical, 3km horizontal of unlit road off the Blackdowns, mostly at 35 to 40mph.

The original owner bought a Magicshine. Asked if he could buy back the Hope V1. (Answer = No). He's now bought himself a new Hope V1 and sold the Magicshine. I'm not exacly sure why he fell out with the Magicshine though.

I'm expecting the Hope + dynamo CYO60 to get me down Cheddar Gorge in the dark in a week and a day's time, and that could be up to 45mph.I will change packs on the Hope V1 once during the ride.

A Hope AND a Cyo ? .... Not sure the rocks of the Cheddar Gorge will withstand that kind of firepower  .

Actually the advantage of that set-up is that you can keep the Hope on it's lowest power setting for most of the ride - and just crank it up for the fast descents. That way one set of rechargeables - even 2300 mAH - will do for all night.

It's only made of limestone so acid will do. (The gorge that is)

Most of the ride (the EE) is on unlit roads so I'll probably be using both most of the way. The CYO won't be very bright going up Burrington Coombe or Blagdon Hill, so will need the Hope for those

With both I tend to have the Hope aimed further away and a bit to the left, the combination then doesn't just show up the road but the road edge as well, and seems to keep animals frozen in the hedges.
