coming along nicely.......................

did you buy the wee red Weinmann washers on the calipers..?

No they were original.

They usual wear out, I have a spare set of calipers tucked away for parts though...

Mostly cleaning/polishing components today. rear wheel is responding well to cleaning and de-rusting, tensioned one or two spokes too. Made a start on dealing with the chrome on the frame. I have got the forks to as good as I think they will get, too much pitting on the metal. I want to retain as much of the acrylichrome paint as possible. Took a few pics of the other parts to go on the bike. its going to be quite 'red'.

The Williams chain set has come up very well. A thick film of oil had protected the chrome well.

Weinmann 730s look nice. These are a slightly different casting to the later ones I used to have on my Continental.

The B15 saddle is still having a daily dose of 'proofide', the underside seems to have some sort of liner on it.

Working on the frame chrome. Lots to do, but the headstock/forks are beginning to look a little more presentable now.

Been busy cleaning and tidying the frame as much as I can. Still much to do on it, but it is looking better. I have tacked on a few bits to get a view of the effect I want. The Allvit rear mech arrived yesterday, this is a second generation version and is in great condition. It will be interesting to see how it performs. It would have been fitted to Carltons and Suns of the time. It certainly looks more in keeping with the machine that the tatty Simplex Prestige it replaces. I have also been continuing to clean, degrease and polish the pedals and hubs. Hopefully this bike might be on the road late summer.

The red mudguards have been hanging around in my workshop for a long time...

Been a bit quiet on this build recently due to other commitments and also purely by the fact that pictures of bits being polished 'aint that interesting.

Anyway I can now report I have repacked the steering head and refitted as well as done a good deal of work on the rear wheel and the lovely Resilion hubs. The front wheel may need a visit to the LBS for a little more truing. Both are responding to a mixture of elbow grease and autosol. Sadly I have found the brazed on gear lever fitting has a stripped thread so I might have to use a band on boss instead. The bike is slowly coming together but still needs a lot of TLC applied to the frame - Im still removing grease and sticky deposits from mounds of insulating tape applied to make it look better by the previous owner/s.

Here are some pictures of my efforts thus far.

A big spanner always helps...

Cleaned the hoods with a mixture of water and Multi surface cleaner with a cloth and brush. Ive swopped them around so the previous scratched out sides now face inwards...

They used to be on my 1970 mauve Corsa but were so badly shot I had to scrap them. Shows the Carlton were still using this bits over a long period.

Dropped one wheel in and cut new cables to size for from and rear brakes. Loosely put in the gear change cable too. I'll need to adapt the red anodised Campag toe clips for fit, but they were just too good to miss.
Started to apply some decals to frame where acrylichrome paint meets the chrome. Helps cover the badly worn paint at these junctures.

I prefer the brake levers set up where yours were, means you can't ride "on the hoods" but I suppose I just got used to that and normally ride those bars with my hands on the bends with my thumbs facing forwards. Later bikes I've built have the bullbar from a set of TT bars without the extensions.

I have now loosely built up the machine, to see how it looks. Still brakes, gears etc to hook up and adjust. Fit new chain and adjust, sort mudguards... the list goes on. The frame decals (original ones) will have to be carefully scraped off for the news ones to go on, sadly they had too many scrapes and knocks. The red bar tape, pump and toe clips will contribute to the overall impact. Overall the machine will have a fair amount of 'patina' of pre-loved scratch and wear though. I think we call it character!

Conditions are a little cramped in my workshop...
